Wanapitei River, Killarney Hwy to Hartley Bay - September 2004
It was mid-September and the weather was almost into full summer conditions, daytime temps in the low 20's and the area was under a huge high pressure ridge which promised good weather for the next 3-5 days. I was days off for the next 6 days, what to do? This was a great chance to get away for a few days with one of the dogs canoeing. I decided to canoe down the bottom section of the Wanapitei River from the Killarney highway to Hartley Bay on the French River. I threw together my kit, tied the canoe on the roof and my wife Janet dropped Sasha and I off just south of the highway at the put in. With the gorgeous weather and time off we arranged for Jan to pick us up 3 days later at the Hartley bay marina in mid afternoon. This is not a long route, approx. 33 kms but I was in no rush and looking forward to 3 relaxing days. Here is a link to the route description in the route data base on the Canadian Canoe Routes website.
